7 Tips On How to Become a Successful Career Momprener

Nov 23, 2022

Before I decided to become a mompreneur I read about several moms that worked from home and always wanted the opportunity to create financial freedom & flexibility to do what I love.

I always had this passion for teaching others about launching a successful career in finance and brand management along with balancing motherhood.

I just knew once I became a mother I would know how to balance it all. I had to juggle graduate school, a personal relationship, family, and still made time for friends all while planning my elegant multicultural wedding on my own.

So of course I could balance being a mom, working in Corporate America, and running my own financial consulting business. Then I had my first child and started my business from home during COVID.

Wow, what was I thinking? It was a great opportunity and I took advantage of it.

I cannot tell you the number of things I learned and misunderstood about running a successful business, getting promoted into at the director level in my career, and juggling motherhood. It was more challenging than I could imagine.

However all the trials and tribulations I went through have led me to understand 7 critical things in order to balance it all and be successful as a mompreneur.

I've put together 7 tips to achieve success as a mompreneur:

Mompreneur Tip #1: Time Is Of The Essence

Working in Corporate America can be demanding at times, but it taught me structure, grit, and how to get organized. I learned how great organization skills and a phenomenal work ethic can create a strength of multitasking under pressure.

Also, I learned that no matter how well you plan it will still be challenging to complete everything on your to-do list when managing a career, business, and toddler.

Most moms have to get kid (s) ready for school, prep lunch, cook dinner, and work on homework each night. Therefore you may underestimate how long it takes to complete your to-do list

The mompreneur planner, Launch Your Inner Entrepreneur: 10 Mindset Shifts for Women to Take Action, Unleash Creativity, and Achieve Financial Success was a lifesaver for me in creating a great balance of launching a world class pharmaceutical brand in corporate, my business, and potty training a toddler in 3 days.

Mompreneur Tip #2: Pick A Niche That Solves A Problem

Know who your target market is and focus on it. In graduate school at Arizona State University, I learned losers spray and winners focus in my marketing brand management course.

What problem do you want to solve? How do you plan to solve that problem? There are several opportunities available, but don't just jump into one because you want to rush into entrepreneurship.

Given all the challenges with being a mompreneur you must focus your time on a specific niche and solve a problem to maximize your time and the opportunity.

Mompreneur Tip #3: Have A Great Support System

It's important to let your spouse, family, and friends know when you need help. This was very important for me to create balance.

I asked my husband to pitch in more around the house, rather than cleaning the dishes, preparing dinner, or bath time with the kid (s) to allow free time to focus on running my business.

As a mom, we tend to struggle to ask for help, because we want to do it all. We don't get an award for being "supermom" we just burn out quickly. Free time will allow you to spend time with the kid (s) before bedtime, work on developing content for a business, and respond to critical business emails.
Also, paying for a nanny, enrolling kid(s) in daycare, and checking with your local community for a reliable babysitter referral is a life saver. These are several ways to free up time by ensuring you have a strong support system.

Mompreneur Tip #4: Communicate With Your Boss & Spouse

Setting a set work schedule and establishing effective communication skills is critical to unlocking ways to influence and thrive as a mompreneur.

As a professional, entrepreneur, or business leader, you must amplify your communication skills to accelerate your career, grow your business, or sharpen your credibility.

The book Influence and Thrive: How Professionals, Entrepreneurs, Business Leaders, & Corporations Use Effective Communication To Get Results taught me specific skills on how to effectively communicate to win in my career, business, and motherhood.

This is a must read for you to create effective communication skills that will allow you to win.

Mompreneur Tip #5: Find A Business Mentor Or Bestie

Network! Network! Network!
Yup you read that right.

It's not what you know, but who you know in business. You will be surprised by some of the things you can learn from others who are on this journey of being a mompreneur. You need someone who can relate to exactly what you are going through.

Facebook groups may be a great resource for meeting other mom entrepreneurs. This is a great avenue for meeting other moms who can support you and push you when it's needed. Also, check your network which is your net worth.

Over the course of my graduate school journey, motherhood journey, and life I met some amazing women who have accomplished the unthinkable. Connect with them, ask for mentorship or a friend to help you navigate this new journey. You can do it, but a business mentor or bestie can go a long way.

Mompreneur Tip #6:It's A Business, Treat It As One

I was once given great advice, "Whenever you launch into your purpose, treat it as a business". Remember to always never forget the "why" behind your business. Align all your goals to solve the why and you will go far.

You may get approached several times to join different types of business endeavors or asked why you don't start a certain business.

This happened to me, and of course it may be financially beneficial, but I knew it didn't align with the "why" behind my business. Write out your SMART goals, then create a plan to tackle them.

Always make sure your goals align to what you really want to do.

Mompreneur Tip 7 :Learn And Keep Growing
Become a life learner. Constantly read and research the problem you are looking to solve as a mompreneur.

Each phase of your career, motherhood, and entrepreneurship will demand different things. Learn how to be flexible in adjusting during each season of life.

Never give up and keep striving to create a balance for yourself. You are becoming the best career mompreneur you can be. Embrace it and enjoy the journey!
